The Omnibus Law on Job Creation is once again the center of international attention. This time, the spotlight came from various global investment institutions.
These investors warned the Indonesian government that the recently launched Omnibus Job Creation Bill has the potential to harm the environment. Especially what happened to the forest.
Reporting from Reuters, Tuesday (6/10/2020), 35 investors expressed their concerns in an open letter addressed to the Indonesian government.
Up to 35 investors manage funds of up to $ 4.1 trillion. Inside are the investment institutions Aviva Investors, Legal & General Investment Management, Church of England Pensions Board, Robeco and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management.
“While we recognize the need to reform business law in Indonesia, we are concerned about the negative impact of the environmental protection measures affected by the Omnibus Employment Law,” said Peter van der Werf, a Robeco representative, in his statement.
These investors said they were concerned that the Employment Creation Law could hamper efforts to protect forests in Indonesia.
“The proposed regulatory changes are aimed at increasing foreign investment. But they run the risk of violating international standards to avoid unintended harmful consequences of business activities,” the investors said.
Investors themselves are currently taking a stance to preserve the environment. They urge the governments of developing countries to protect nature.
The government created the Cipta Kerja Omnibus Law itself to facilitate investment in Indonesia. The coordinating Minister of Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, said that this regulation could reduce the problems that hinder investment.
“The Job Creation Bill will promote regulatory reform and debureaucratization, so that government services are more efficient, easy and safe, with the application of the norms,” Airlangga said in a quoted written statement. detikcom.
Previously, the Omnibus Law on Job Creation was also in the international spotlight, coming from the Council of Global Union, an institution established by several international unions.
The letter was addressed to President Joko Widodo and signed by various international union leaders. In the letter, they asked the Jokowi government to repeal the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.
They also asked the government to ensure that the laws that are passed do not reduce the rights and benefits of workers. The right to benefit is what is guaranteed in Law 13 of 2003 on labor, as well as in international labor standards.
They also asked the government to renegotiate and open a constructive dialogue with the unions to shape all labor regulations.
