Three candidates for regional chiefs died exposed to Covid-19

The General Electoral Commission (KPU) declared three candidates for regional chief Pilkada Simultaneously, 2020 died from exposure to Covid-19.

KPU Commissioner Evi Novida Ginting Manik said one person died during the registration period. Meanwhile, two other people died after being named candidates.

“Innalillahi wa innailaihi rajiun will be a candidate who died,” Evi told reporters on Sunday (4/10).


Evi said the first concurrent Pilkada participants to die from Covid-19 were the incumbent Regent Candidates of the Berau Muharram Regency. She passed away on Tuesday (9/22) during the registration period.

The PKS politician was known to have Covid-19 while undergoing a medical examination at the Kanujoso Djatiwibowo Regional Hospital in Balikpapan. After his death, Muharram’s candidacy was replaced by his wife, Sri Juniarsih Mas.

Then there is Adi Darma, the candidate for mayor of Bontang. Adi died on Thursday (January 19), six days after testing positive for Covid-19.

Currently, Adi’s name still appears in the KPU as a mayoral candidate. However, the coalition of bearers opened opportunities to bring Najirah Adi Darma, the late wife.

The third candidate to die from Covid-19 was Central Bangka’s district chief candidate Ibnu Soleh. He died on Sunday (10/4) while undergoing intensive care at Bakti Timah Hospital (RSBT), Bangka Belitung Islands.

The current candidate for regent has tested positive for Covid-19 since Sunday (9/27). Ibnu’s children, wife, and servants also tested positive for Covid-19. They were still being treated when Ibnu’s body was buried.

Under these conditions, the KPU allows the coalition of supporting parties to find a replacement. Article 78 (2) letter a, KPU Regulation (PKPU) number 3 of 2017 regarding Pilkada’s candidacy allows candidates to be replaced if they die.

Previously, the government, DPR, and KPU continued Pilkada 2020 simultaneously even though the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic were still worsening. During the registration period, the KPU recorded that there were 63 candidates exposed to Covid-19.

Candidates were not allowed to go through the pilkada stage before being declared negative. Currently, three of them have died. While other candidates have been declared cured and can follow the next stages.
