STEPANAKERT, KOMPAS.com – Azerbaijani troops opened fire on Stepanakert, the main city in the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region on Sunday.

The incident was reported by Armenian officials as the fighting entered its second week.

Later, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry in Baku said that the Armenian armed forces fired rockets at the cities of Terter and Horadiz in the Fizuli region of Stepanakert.

Baku and Yerevan have spent decades in a heated conflict over the ethnic Armenian province, which was separated from Azerbaijan in a bitter war in the 1990s.

The last confrontation that broke out since Sunday (9/27/2020) was the largest in decades and has claimed 240 lives, including more than 30 civilians.

The fighting continues despite international calls for the two neighboring countries to stop the fighting and begin talks.

Talks to resolve this conflict have stalled many times since the 1994 ceasefire.
