The Eternal Flame of Mrapen in Grobogan Regency, Central Java, has been completely extinguished this week. It turned out that this was the first time the eternal flame, which was often used for sporting events, until religious activities had lost their fire.
“The fire has just been completely extinguished this time. In the 1990s or if I am not mistaken, in 1996, the Eternal Flame of Mrapen had reduced its intensity of gas discharge, but did not extinguish it,” said the Head of the Energy Section of the Office of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) South Kendeng Area, Sinung Sugeng Arianto, when contacted detikcom, Friday (02/10/2020).
Sinung said that in 1996, the gas discharge at the Mrapen Eternal Api point was reduced. At that time, efforts to restore the eternal flame were carried out by drilling a depth of about 20 meters to get the gas out again.
These efforts also paid off. The Eternal Flame of Mrapen, found in Mrapen Hamlet, Manggarmas Village, Godong District, has been rekindled.
“After being pierced, it turned out that the gas came out, the intensity of the flames ignited again. In that year it did not go out, it just happened this time,” Sinung explained.
He said that Mrapen’s Eternal Flame was reported to be completely extinguished on Friday (9/25). The South Kendeng Region Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources team has also conducted an initial verification. It is suspected that Mrapen’s Eternal Flame went out because there was no gas supply.
“From the initial check, the fire went out because there was no gas supply. The report we received,” Sinung explained.
He said that before the Eternal Flame of Mrapen was extinguished, drilling activities had been carried out to find sources of water, on September 12, 2020. The location of the drilling is about 200 meters from the point of the Eternal Fire of Mrapen.
Sinung said that 50 meters of water appeared as a result of this drilling. In addition, there was a roar from the ground and a smell of hydrocarbon gas when drilling was in progress.
“But you can’t say it’s the main cause, it’s still an early indication or guess,” Sinung said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Manggarmas Village, Achmad Mufid, revealed that thus far there have been no signs of Mrapen’s Eternal Flame returning to light. Mufid said that Mrapen’s Eternal Flame was gradually dying out. Initially, the fire appeared to subside because it was estimated that the gas content released would be reduced.
However, the Eternal Flame of Mrapen was completely extinguished on Friday (9/25). Mufid also admitted that he later reported the extinction of Mrapen’s Eternal Flame to the appropriate agency.
“I have reported it to the relevant agencies and a team has gone to the field to see the condition,” Mufid explained when contacted. detikcom today.
It is not certain that the Eternal Flame of Mrapen, which is the source of the torches of various national and international events, has been extinguished. The team of experts is currently conducting studies and treatments to identify the extinction of the Eternal Flame of Mrapen.
