jpnn.com, JAKARTA – Indonesia calls on Azerbaijan and Armenia to end armed contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
“Indonesia calls on both sides to act with restraint, hold a ceasefire, promote dialogue and resolve conflicts peacefully in accordance with international law and current UN Security Council resolutions,” said the Thursday the call broadcast through the official Twitter of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1/10).
Indonesia also calls on Azerbaijan and Armenia to return to the Minsk Process negotiating table, facilitated by the OCSE.
The OCSE Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, Russia and the United States, was formed in 1992 to find a peaceful solution to the protracted Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but to no avail. However, in 1994 a ceasefire was agreed.
Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area of Azerbaijan located in the southern Caucasus. Although the region is part of Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh is mainly inhabited by ethnic Armenians.
The province had been separated in the 1990s, but it did not receive recognition from many countries as an independent country.
Clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces have broken out again in Nagorno-Karabakh since Sunday (9/27). The fighting has spread and crossed the border area, so the two countries of the former Soviet Union have the potential to go to war.
In response to the conflict, the government called on Indonesian citizens in Azerbaijan and Armenia to always comply with the regulations set by the local government and to always maintain communication with the Indonesian Embassy.
