“An Armenian SU-25 aircraft has been shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet … which flew from Azerbaijani territory,” Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Shushan Stepanyan wrote on Facebook. AFP, Wednesday (9/30/2020).

“The Armenian pilot was heroically killed.”

Still, Turkey and Azerbaijan deny these claims. Azerbaijan Defense Ministry spokesman Vagif Dyargahly also called the claim a lie.

“Armenian propaganda,” he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s press assistant, Fahrettin Altun, called the claim completely false. Earlier, Armenia also said that Turkey sent mercenaries to support Azerbaijani troops.

“Armenia should withdraw from the territory under its occupation instead of resorting to cheap propaganda tricks,” Altun said, although he previously commented on Twitter that his country supports Azerbaijan.

War broke out between the two countries since Sunday (9/27/2020). Almost 100 people have died.

This is the worst since 2016. The two countries of the former Soviet Union have been at war since the 1990s.

The war broke out in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is within Azerbaijan but is led by ethnic Armenians. The majority of the Armenian population is Christian, while Azerbaijan has a Muslim majority.

Armenia supported the desire to separate. However, until now this area is still recognized as the territory of Azerbaijan.

The war between the two countries rekindled concerns about stability in the southern Caucasus. Also, this is an oil pipeline corridor that brings oil and gas to the world market.

The pipeline that delivers Caspian oil and natural gas from Azerbaijan to the world passes near Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia warned in July of a security risk in the southern Caucasus after Azerbaijan threatened to attack Armenia’s nuclear power plant in possible retaliation.

Meanwhile, the United Nations called on the two countries to stop the war. The members of the security council strongly condemned the violence that ensued, much less civilian lives.
