JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Polda Metro Jaya together with Tangerang Lapas have carried out an interrogation of several witnesses related to the escape of the man sentenced to death in the Cai Changpan drug case.
According to witness testimony, Changpan, aka Cai Ji Fan, aka Antoni, happened to buy cigarettes after escaping down the sewer.
“Several witnesses from the community around the prison did see him (Cai Changpan) buy cigarettes,” Polda Metro Jaya Public Relations chief Kombes Pol Yusri Yunus told reporters at Polda Metro Jaya on Tuesday (9/29/ 2020).

After successfully escaping, Yusri said, Cai Changpan also had time to return home to the Tejo, Bogor, West Java area.
The police conducted an intensive examination of 14 witnesses who were prison officials, Cai Changpan’s wife and family.
“Because the interval between him and his escape was approximately 4-5 hours, he arrived at his residence in Tejo, Bogor, West Java,” he said.
Cai Changpan managed to escape from Tangerang Class I Prison on September 14, 2020.
However, the leak was only discovered four days later, on September 18, 2020.

He managed to escape after drilling a hole from the room to the sewer, which was estimated to be about 30 meters.
Based on the results of investigations of other inmates, it was suspected that Cai Changpan’s escape was planned about six months ago.
Cai Ji Fan had also previously escaped arrest. He once fled when he was detained at the Police Criminal Investigation Unit on January 24, 2017.
Cai Changpan escaped by making a hole in the bathroom wall.
However, his escape did not last long because three days later he was recaptured from his hideout in the Sukabumi area of West Java.
Dead sentence
Cai Ji Fan was sentenced to death on July 19, 2017 by the Tangerang City District Court (PN).

The death sentence came after Cai Changpan was found guilty of smuggling 110 kilograms of crystalline methamphetamine from the Banten region in 2016.
The death penalty was further strengthened by a decision of the Banten High Court number 68 / PID / 2017 / PT.BTN on September 27, 2017.
“He sentenced the defendant Cai Changpan alias Antoni to the death penalty. He ordered the defendant to remain in detention. State evidence,” quoted from the verdict on the Supreme Court website on Tuesday (9/22/2020).
