KOMPAS.com – The name Lieutenant Colonel Untung was often mentioned in the events of the September 30 Movement / PKI or G30S / PKI. Previously, Lieutenant Colonel Untung received Bintang Sakti in Operation Trikora in Irian.
Many people thought that Untung was a traitor in the G30S / PKI incident. However, not a few people thought that he was just a puppet for certain people who wanted to overthrow the Sukarno government.
Fortunately, who is known for being smart and calm, has had good fortune in his military career. However, his good fortune turned unfortunate in G30S / PKI and he had to die in front of the firing squad.
Lucky past
In the book Fortunately, Cakrabirawa and G30S (2011) by Petrik Matanasi, Untung has the real name of Kusman. He was born in Seruni Village, Kedungbajul, Kebumen on July 3, 1926.

His father, Abdullah, was a batik merchant in Pasar Kliwon, Solo. The shop where Abdullah worked was owned by people of Arab descent.
From childhood, Kusman was the adopted son of his uncle, Sjamsuri. Kusman is classified as a quiet child.
As an adult, Kusman didn’t want to stand out and was always humbled. Kusman is fortunate to be able to experience elementary school in Ketelan, although it is not as elitist as HIS or ELS.
After graduating from elementary school, Kusman continued his trade school. Not having had time to graduate, the Japanese army landed and controlled Indonesia. This caused Kusman to drop out of school.

Joins Heiho
The period of colonialization of the Dutch East Indies has passed since the arrival of the Japanese. The Japanese government focused on defending Indonesia from the allied invasion and establishing a military force.

Kusman eventually signed up to become a member of Heiho. At the time, most of Kusman’s teammates were generally PETAs. He deliberately entered Heiho so that he could be sent to the front.
Like others, Kusman received training and an introduction to the military world and the Japanese language. After receiving training, they were deployed to various war facilities owned by the Japanese army. For Kusman himself, not many knew where he was assigned.
Most likely, he is still stationed on the island of Java. Because after Japan lost, it was in Central Java. Heiho began Kusman’s career as a paid professional military officer.
After Heiho’s dissolution, Kusman became a member of the People’s Security Army (TKR), which became the forerunner of the TNI.

Renamed “Fortunately”
Informed of the book September 30 Movement: Actors, Heroes and Adventurers (2010) by Julius Pour, during the war for independence, Kusman served in the Wonogiri area as a member of the Soedigdo battalion.

The Sudigdo Battalion is part of the Senopati Panembahan Division based in southern Central Java. Very influenced by communist ideas. / Marxism.
The battalion is believed to have been involved in the 1948 Madiun Incident. When Siliwangi troops cleared the Sudigdo Battalion, Kusman, who was already a sergeant major, escaped to Madiun and became a small part of the Madiun Affair rebellion of 1948.
After the Madiun incident and the Dutch military aggression II, Kusman returned to Central Java and changed his name to Untung. He rejoined TNI and once served as the commander of the Bull Raider Battalion.
In 1949, he joined Battalion 444 in Kleco, Solo as a Company commander. On October 10, 1950, he changed to the Panembahan Senopati Brigade.
Its territory includes Surakarta and it is domiciled in Surakarta. In January 1952, the Panembahan Senopati Brigade changed its name to the 15th Infantry Regiment.

Military career
Untung had participated in Operation August 17, 1958 led by Ahmad Yani. At that time, Untung was still a company commander with the rank of first lieutenant. In 1959, Untung returned to Central Java.
Upon completion of the operation, Untung became commander of Battalion 454 / Bull Raiders Dipenogero, Srondol, south of Semarang. At that time the rank of Major.
Around August 14, 1962, Untung was sent to the Sorong area, West Papua. Untung was part of Operation Mandala led by Suharto.
After a successful military operation, Untung received a special promotion from major to lieutenant colonel and received a service star after leading guerrilla forces to attack the Dutch army in West Papua.
Additionally, he was also tasked with serving as Commander of the 1st Battalion, Cakrabirawa Regiment.

As is well known, Untung appointed himself president of the God of Revolution and at the same time led the September 30 Movement just to protect Indonesia’s nationalist father Sukarno, who was also Untung’s superior.
When he became president of the Revolutionary Council, he was known by a new name, namely Untung Syamsuri. Not many remember that the name was Kusman.
At the end of his story, Untung was sentenced to death in Cimahi. His pardon was denied and he had to be confronted by a firing squad. He himself died in 1966.
