LIVE – Manchester United won their first Premier League victory in 2020/2021 after defeating Brighton & Hove Albion. In a match at Amex Stadium, on Saturday, September 26, 2020, MU won 3-2.

The drama came in the 96th minute after referee Chris Kavanagh, who had blown the long whistle to mark the end of the match, decided to continue the match again.
Kavanagh resumed the match after reviewing the assistant referee (VAR) video and seeing Neal Maupay make a hand in the Brighton penalty area. Maupat was thought to have played handball when he tried to block Harry Maguire’s header.
Bruno Fernandes, who was the executioner of shot 12, finally secured MU’s dramatic victory. Fernandes scored the goal in second-half injury time in the 10th minute.
After the game, questions arose. Was Fernandes’ goal valid because it was scored after the referee blew the long whistle to mark the end of the match?
In accordance with point 8.13 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) regulations, the VAR can be used to review incidents that occurred before the referee blew the final whistle and the match could be replayed after the referee have verified.
“VAR is like the assistant referee: if the assistant referee indicates that a foul occurred before the referee blows the final whistle, the referee can still take action as long as he has not left the field of play.”
“If this happens, the VAR must immediately inform the referee to inform the players to prevent them from leaving the field of play. The incident must be reviewed according to normal VAR procedures (verification, review, etc.).
“To avoid such problems, at the end of the round, the VAR should inform them immediately. The referee will conduct a check / review so that, if possible, the referee can stop the game / postponement as a restart to avoid being reviewed after that the final player has sounded “.

Previously, similar incidents occurred in the Mainz versus Freiburg match in the Bundesliga in 2018. In this match, referee Guido Winkmann sanctioned Mainz after some players left the field of play at half-time.
Winkmann called players from both teams who had entered the dressing room after seeing the VAR and assumed that one of the Freiburg players was doing handball.
