GARUT JOURNAL – A tsunami of up to 20 meters is predicted to occur along the southern coast of Java, starting from West Java and East Java.
The research team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) warned about the prediction of this potential tsunami.
Based on the results of the research carried out by ITB, the research refers to the results of the processing of earthquake data recorded by the observation station of the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), as well as data from the System of Global Positioning (GPS).

Thus, an indication of an area with relatively low seismic activity in its surroundings (or what is called a seismic gap) in the south of the island of Java can be obtained.
“The seismic gap has the potential to become a huge source (megathrust) in the future.
To assess the flood hazard, a tsunami model based on various large earthquake scenarios was carried out along the mega-shock segment in the south of the island of Java.
“The worst case scenario is if the megathrust segments across Java break simultaneously,” explained Sri Widiyantoro, a researcher at ITB, quoted in Pikiranrakyat-Tasikmalaya.com via PMJ News.
