Gatot Nurmantyo linked his removal as TNI commander to his address to see the movie ‘G30S / PKI’. At that time, Gatot’s removal from TNI’s top leadership was preceded by a series of events that heated up the national situation.
Gatot’s removal as TNI commander was carried out by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on December 8, 2017. Gatot retired on April 1, 2018. He was replaced by Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, who is currently serving as commander of the TNI.
Gatot’s removal was preceded by a series of political events that drew national attention. Gatot was involved in several of these political events.
Beginning with the demonstrations on November 4 (411) and December 2, also known as 212. These actions demanded that the government take action in relation to the Basuki T Purnama (Ahok) blasphemy case.
Gatot rejoined the 411 crowd when President Jokowi was not present. Gatot was wearing a white cap at the time. At the time, Gatot’s interpretation seemed to be close to the mass of Islamic mass organizations. Then Gatot was also in Action 212. Only then, President Jokowi was also present in the midst of mass action. President Jokowi and his staff also participated in Friday prayers with the masses in Monas.
In the detikcom note, Gatot also generated controversy when in an interview with a television channel he was offended when Muslims were accused of treason. “If there is a demonstration, it is not considered treason. Surely the demonstration will be done with the maturity of the community channeling its aspirations, and that is fine, ”said Gatot, May 4, 2017.
Two weeks later, the retired general has again surprised several parties. While appearing at the Golkar Party National Leadership Meeting in Balikpapan, he recited the poem “But we don’t have.” Political consultant Denny JA’s poem contains criticism of the government.
“If the Commander wants this poem to criticize the Jokowi government, it is the wrong direction. Perhaps it is like pouring water into a saucepan, splashing his own face,” said Andreas Hugo Pareira, member of Commission I of the DPR of the PDI-P faction, on May 23, 2017.
Later, Gatot Nurmantyo was again accused of being in politics after issuing a statement about the purchase of 5,000 weapons outside the TNI agency. Gatot’s statement generated much criticism. However, he rejected the accusations that he was in politics.
Later, Gatot also ordered the TNI ranks to watch the G30S / PKI movie together in 2017. TNI’s plan to hold a G30S / PKI movie together under Gatot’s orders at the time became controversial. There are those who think that the movie is no longer worth watching. However, there are also those who support the TNI plan as an effort to remember this nation’s dark history.
“Yes, that’s my order, what do you want? Only the government can ban me,” Gatot said at the time.
According to Gatot, even President Sukarno himself gave a message so as not to forget history. “History should not discredit. This only reminds the children of the nation, do not allow the incident to happen again. Because it hurts everyone. And the victims are many,” he said.
Gatot stated that the Home Secretary had allowed him to order all members to watch the New Order era movie. When asked about the still controversial film material, Gatot said viewing the film was an attempt to set the story straight.
“And much less, I do not want controversy. This is also an effort to straighten the story. I just want to show the events that happened at that time. Because many of my children, my soldiers, do not know,” he explained.

It did not stop there, while DPR was conducting a due diligence process for Marshal Hadi, who was appointed by Jokowi to become the new TNI commander, Gatot conducted a review at TNI.
There are 84 officers who were transferred by Gatot, prior to his removal as TNI commander. Several parties felt that Gatot was placing his ‘men’ in strategic positions within TNI. Gatot’s rotation of 85 TNI officers is contained in Decree of the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Number Kep / 982 / XII / 2017 dated December 4, 2017.
The position mutations of 84 senior TNI officers (Pati) consisted of 46 Pati in the Indonesian Army, 28 Pati in the Navy, and 11 Pati in the Air Force. One of those who was transferred was Lieutenant General Edy Rahmayadi of Pangkostrad to become a senior officer at TNI AD headquarters.
Edy proposed early retirement to advance to the 2018 North Sumatra Pilgub. Edy’s position at the time was held by Major General Sudirman, who previously served as the Army Chief of Staff.
Gatot’s decision received a warning from a member of the I DPR Commission of the PDIP faction, TB Hasanuddin. Commission I partnered with TNI, and at the time was conducting a feasibility test for Marshal Hadi, who was appointed by Jokowi to become TNI Commander.
“Mutations of high-ranking officers should be carried out by the new commander to create a more conducive atmosphere,” said TB Hasanuddin, who at the time was serving as vice president of DPR Commission I.
Gatot’s decision was later overturned by Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto when he was appointed commander of the TNI. Marshal Hadi canceled part of Gatot’s decision on the firing and appointment of 84 high-ranking TNI (pati) officers.
The cancellation was established in the TNI Commander’s Decree Number Kep / 982.a / XII / 2017 regarding removal and appointment to positions within the TNI, which was issued and signed by the TNI commander, Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto on Tuesday, December 19, 2017.
