This is BTS’s full speech at the UN General Assembly

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – South Korean boy band BTS is trusted again to make statements at the 75th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Wednesday (9/23/2020)

The seven members of BTS told stories of their inspiring struggles to confront the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected the world.

UNICEF hopes that BTS messages can encourage and spread hope for the young generations around the world.

The following is the content of BTS’s full speech at the UN General Assembly, Wednesday (9/23/2020).

RM

We are honored to have this rare opportunity to speak at the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations.

My name is RM, the leader of the BTS group. Two years ago here, I said their names. I encourage you to give me the opportunity to hear your voices. And I am full of imagination.

As a child in a small town in Ilsan, Korea, as a young man at UNGA, as a citizen of this world, I imagined the infinite possibilities before all of us and my heart was beating fast.

But Covid-19 was beyond my imagination. Our world tour was completely canceled, all our plans fell through, and I felt alone.

I looked up at the sky but couldn’t find any stars at night.

Jimin

I feel desperate, everything feels broken. I can only look out the window. I can only go to my room.

Yesterday I was singing and rocking with fans all over the world and now my world is conical in just one room.

And then my friends pulled my hand. We calm down and talk about what we can do together.

Life is simple, perhaps for the first time. It was a very precious time, not expected but welcome nonetheless.

I’m getting used to seeing the whole world sinking in an instant. When I was on tour, I stood in the bright light and screamed out loud.

But when I returned to my room, the world felt tight. My room is very narrow, but my world and the world we have come to are very wide.

In this world we have instruments, namely mobile phones and our fans.

But this time it felt different, I felt lonelier and smaller. Why? I thought about it for a long time. I think maybe it’s because I’m getting harder and harder to imagine.

I was frustrated and sad, but I took my notebook, wrote songs, and thought about who I was before.

I thought, ‘if I give up here, then I’m not the star of my life.’ It is an act that great people do.

I hope

I don’t know who was the first. We embraced all these emotions and seven of us started making music together.

This is where music comes from and it keeps us honest.

Life is unpredictable. We do not know all the answers.

I know where I want to go, but I don’t know how to get there.

All I do to get to this point is believe in myself, do what I do best, and love what I do.

I found again the people I love. The members (BTS), my family and my friends. I found the music I loved again and I found myself.

Thinking ahead and working hard is important. But respecting yourself, cheering yourself up, and staying happy are the most important things.

In this world full of uncertainty, we must respect the interests of me, of you and of us.

That’s the Love Myself message we’ve been talking about for the past three years. That’s the message in the lyrics of our song Dynamite. I am diamond, you know I glow.

Jungkook

One night we worked together. RM said I couldn’t see the stars anymore, but I saw my face drawn on the window. I saw all our faces.

Our songs become stories that we want to share with others.

We live in uncertainty, but nothing has really changed.

If there is something I can do, if our voices can give strength to others, that is what we want and that is what we will continue to do.

RM

Towards the end of the video RM appeared again with a message. When I started to feel lost, I thought of my face at the window, just like Jungkook said. I remember the words I said here two years ago: “Love yourself, speak yourself.”

Now more than ever, we must try to remember who we are and face who we are.

We must try to love ourselves and re-imagine the future. BTS will always be with you.

Tomorrow can be dark, painful, and difficult for us. We can stumble or fall.

But the stars shine brightly when the night is so dark.

If all the stars are hidden, the moon will illuminate us. Even if the moon is dark, let our faces be the light to help us find our way.

We snuggle up exhausted, but let’s dream again. Let’s dream of a future in which the world is no longer in our little room.

It may seem like the night never ends and we will always feel alone, but the night is always dark before dawn comes.
