Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
President of the United States Donald trump, attend the virtual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (PBB) along with other world leaders. In his speech, Trump attacked China pandemic COVID-19.
He called the coronavirus the “Chinese virus” and urged the United Nations to hold Beijing to account.
He accused Beijing of “allowing the flights to leave China and infect the world” and of “virtually controlling” the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO Communications Director Gabby Ster responded immediately to this statement. In her tweet, Ster denied Trump’s claims that the WHO was under the control of certain countries.
“WHO has 194 Member States; no government controls us,” he wrote.
Responding to the challenge of multilateralism, Trump said world leaders must put their respective countries first.
“For decades, the same voices have proposed the same failed solutions to pursue global ambitions at the expense of their own people, but only when you take care of your own citizens will you find the right foundation to (build) cooperation,” Trump said.
“As president, I reject approaches that have failed in the past, and I proudly put America first, just as you should put your country first. Okay. That’s what you have to do,” he continued.
Meanwhile, in his speech, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres referred to the health crisis as “our moment in 1945”, referring to World War II. He described Covid-19 as “a poisonous virus that is shaking the foundations of democracy in many countries.”
Guterres’ statement also referred to the increase in global poverty and the breakdown of diplomatic relations. He warned of an increasingly bitter impasse between China and the United States, whose diplomatic relations are moving “in a very dangerous direction.”
