According to the presidential spokesman, the pilkada must be carried out with strict health protocols.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Presidential spokesman Fadjroel Rachman said that the 2020 Regional Headquarters (Pilkada) Elections were still in accordance with the December 9, 2020 schedule. This was done in order to protect constitutional rights of people, the right to vote and the right to vote, and was carried out by strict discipline of the health protocol.
“Pilkada must be carried out with strict health protocol discipline accompanied by law enforcement and strict sanctions so that a new group of pilkada does not occur,” Fadjroel said in a press release in Jakarta on Monday (21 / 9).
He conveyed that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had emphasized that holding regional elections cannot wait for the pandemic to end, because no country knows when the Covid-19 pandemic will end. “Therefore, the implementation of the regional elections must follow strict health protocols to be safe and remain democratic,” Fadjroel said.
He said that regional elections during a pandemic are not impossible, other countries such as Singapore, Germany, France and South Korea also hold general elections during a pandemic, with the application of strict health protocols.
According to Fadjroel, the government invites all parties to work together to avoid potential new Covid-19 transmission clusters at each stage of the elections.
Based on the KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 6 of 2020, the implementation of the 2020 regional elections must implement a health protocol without recognizing the color of the regional zoning. All related ministries and agencies have also prepared all efforts to face the elections in accordance with the health and law enforcement protocols.
“This simultaneous regional election should be an impetus for the emergence of new ways and new innovations for the community together with state officials to stand up together and make the pilkada a stage for brainstorming, challenging actions and acting to reduce and break the chain of spread of COVID-19, “said Fadjroel.
Furthermore, Fadjroel said, this simultaneous regional election also showed the international community that Indonesia is a constitutional democracy and maintains the sustainability of a democratic system of government in accordance with the ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 constitution.
Previously, the Executive Board of Nadhlatul Ulama (PBNU) and the Central Executive Board (PP) of Muhammadiyah issued a recommendation that the implementation of regional elections should be simultaneously postponed to prevent the increasingly widespread spread of Covid-19 in society. .
