The meeting was held after Lutfi was officially sworn in by President Jokowi on Monday (9/14/2020).

Following its official inauguration, the former Indonesian Ambassador to Japan and former Director of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) will carry out two priority programs.

First, ensure that the US extends the approval of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) mechanism to Indonesia.

Second, Lutfi will start negotiating talks on the limited free trade agreement with the United States.

“I will encourage and ensure that the GSP agreement is extended,” Lutfi said in a press release on Monday.

“So start negotiating talks instead of the limited trade agreement, that is, goods in the United States whose tax is less than 5 percent can be zero percent without going through Congress. We begin negotiations immediately, that’s one priority”.

Before becoming Indonesian Ambassador to the US, Lutfi served as Commerce Minister and President of BKPM. He is currently replacing Mahendra Siregar, who is currently serving as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
