Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – It seems that not all types of masks can prevent the transmission of the corona virus (Covid-19). Diving and polishing masks, which are most commonly used by the community, are not effective in preventing drops.
Diving and polishing masks are 0-5% effective, this figure is well below that of three-layer fabric masks with a 50-70% effectiveness rate. This makes the use of this diving mask and polishing in public places a high risk of contracting Covid-19.
Covid-19 doctor and volunteer Muhammad Fajri Adda’i revealed that the diving masks are made of a thin, stretchy material. Also, this type of mask only consists of a layer of fabric and has a tendency to loosen.
“The scuba mask is a thin layer, ineffective, because the material is neoprene, it tends to be elastic. If you pull it, the pores get bigger. Although we need the ability to filter,” Fajri explained, quoted by CNN Indonesia on Friday ( 09/18/2020).
The Covid-19 Management Working Group also emphasized that it does not recommend the use of diving masks or polishers in various public facilities.
“This diving mask is a one-layer mask and it is too thin. So the possibility of it being translucent and not being able to filter it is higher. So it is advisable to use a quality mask,” said the spokesman for the Group of Covid-19 work, Wiku Adisasmito, at a press conference at the Presidential Office on Tuesday (15). / 9/2020) then.
Previously, PT Kereta Commuterline Indonesia (KCI) asked Electric Rail Train (KRL) users to avoid the use of diving masks and buffers due to their ineffectiveness in preventing transmission of the virus, officially known as SARS-CoV-2.
But don’t be sad, people can wear other types of masks that are more effective in protecting themselves from the crown. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released types of medical and non-medical masks that can be used to prevent the spread of the crown.
1. N95 mask
This is a Disposable Filtering Facepiece Respirator (FFR) group mask. This mask has a tight face seal fit for users to avoid aerosols and droplet exposure. This mask is recommended for medical personnel who have direct contact with Covid-19 patients.

2. 3-layer surgical mask
This mask has three layers that effectively filter droplets that come out of the user when coughing, sneezing or talking. This mask is recommended for people with flu symptoms, coughing or sneezing and for medical personnel.
3. Cloth masks
Cloth masks are non-medical masks that must be worn for everyday use. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ideally a fabric mask consists of three layers. That is, the innermost layer made of a hydrophilic material, such as cotton or cotton blends.
The middle layer is made of hydrophobic synthetic non-woven materials, such as polypropylene or cotton lining, which can improve filtration or resist dripping. An exterior report made from a hydrophobic material such as polypropylene, polyester, or a mixture of the two.
