Buff and diving masks are not recommended, this is a safe type of mask

Many people often wear diving and buff masks when on the move to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, this type of mask turned out to be ineffective in preventing the transmission of the corona virus through droplets.

In a study conducted by Duke University, 14 types of masks were tested. The suede masks commonly used by motorcyclists are much worse than the more common ones. Buff and diving masks offer very little protection.

PT KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI) even approached KRL users to avoid wearing buff masks and diving masks. On social media accounts, PT KCI explained that diving or buff masks were only 5 percent effective in preventing the risk of exposure to dust, viruses and bacteria.

As is known, wearing a mask is one of the efforts to prevent COVID-19 in addition to washing your hands and keeping your distance.

So what are the types of masks that are safe to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus?

1. N95 mask

This mask is a type of receiver. The N95 mask offers more protection than other types of masks because it can filter large and small particles. Just as the name suggests, the N95 mask can block 95 percent of minute particles.

Some N95 masks have a valve that makes them easier to inhale. It’s just that the price of this type of mask is quite high on the market.

2. Surgical masks

If diving masks are prohibited, surgical masks are definitely the right choice. Surgical masks are also known as medical masks, these masks are disposable to protect the user’s nose and mouth from contact with droplets, splashes, and aerosols that may contain germs or viruses.

Surgical masks can filter large particles into the air. Surgical masks can also protect others by reducing exposure to saliva and respiratory secretions from mask wearers. This surgical mask can provide protection when N95 masks are not available.

3. Cloth mask

Cloth masks can reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Cloth masks are made from common materials, such as tightly woven cotton sheets. We recommend choosing a 2-3 layer fabric mask to reduce the spread of droplets that can occur.

So cloth masks may be a better option than diving and polishing masks. Quoted in Science Alert, the number of drops was observed to increase when people polished. The material used may have broken down several droplets into smaller particles.

This makes polishing mask wearers counterproductive because the smallest droplets are easily carried through the air and could harm those around them.

Avoiding the use of masks and buffs is done because inside the KRL the air is colder, so the droplets can fly and stay in the air for a long time, so the transmission of COVID-19 is increasing.
