Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal and Human Rights (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD evaluate options for postponing regional chief elections (Pilkada) 2020 until the pandemic COVID-19 ends irrationally.
The reason is that Mahfud said that so far no one has been able to confirm the end of the Wuhan, China pandemic virus.
“If Covid is finished, no one knows when it will be finished. So, 270 Regional Governments, they have to be named plt where there are countries, 270 regional governments must be acting as if waiting for Covid, that is not true either,” Mahfud said in a virtual discussion , Saturday (12/9) night.
“So we are not rational if the proposal to postpone the election of regional chiefs just because waiting for Covid to end is not clear when it will be,” Mahfud added.
He explained the choice of the government together with the General Electoral Commission (KPU) and the House of Representatives (DPR), which at that time decided to postpone the Pilkada until December 9, was in a situation that was not different from the current one.
Predicted to end in May, the covid-19 pandemic has even continued to peak in recent weeks leading into September. According to him, the predictions about Covid-19 of various experts and experts continued to deviate.
Therefore, Mahfud asked all parties to follow the process that had been running and that had been decided by the government. He believes that there are no convincing predictions about Covid-19.
“Predictions are always changing. In the past, someone said wow, May is over. That’s already a campus math calculation. After that, it doesn’t happen again. It’s around July, August, it doesn’t happen anymore. September is getting louder, louder, no longer. of course, “he said.
Various parties have conveyed a number of options to change Pilkada. The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has called on the government and electoral management bodies to stop the implementation of Pilkada 2020 simultaneously because it has the potential to violate human rights.
Komnas HAM believes that the right to life, the right to health and the right to security will be violated if elections are held. Furthermore, the corona virus pandemic situation in Indonesia is not yet under control.
The president of the Popular Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo also expressed the same. Bamsoet, his nickname, asked the government not to insist on holding regional elections in 2020 if the rate of spread of covid-19 remains dangerous.
Bamsoet asked the government to give more priority to public health than to impose the five-year democratic party.
This was also conveyed by the chairman of Commission I of the Regional Representative Council, Fachrul Razi. He emphasized that his party rejects the implementation of the 2020 simultaneous regional elections amid the covid-19 pandemic. He called on the government to postpone regional elections until 2021.
“DPD RI through Committee I requested the government to immediately take the space or legal loophole in Law Number 6 of 2020 that provides space to postpone the implementation of Pilkada in the following year,” Antara said.
