Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, revealed plans for the expansion of Papua province. This was revealed by Mahfud after holding a working meeting with the MPR leadership at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (11/9/2020).

“The expansion of the Papua region is planned to expand to become 5, plus 3 of the current one (Papua and West Papua). Because that is a mandate of the law,” he said as reported by CNN Indonesia.

The law in question is Law 21 of 2001 on special autonomy for the province of Papua.

The government will involve the MPR Papua Caucus called For Papua in the program. The caucus, Mahfud said, would communicate the various differences of opinion that are still taking place between the people of Papua and the government so far.

MPR President Bambang Soesatyo stated that the division of Papua into a total of 5 regions was solely for the welfare of the Papuan people. This is because Papua is an inseparable part of Indonesia.

Bamsoet, the nickname of Bambang Soesatyo, also stated that the government is currently drafting a Presidential Instruction (Inpres) so that development in Papua is more integrated from all sectors of ministries and institutions.

Bamsoet regretted that, so far, development in Papua has only been carried out in the respective sectoral ministries / institutions without clear integration.

“Not independently, as now the ministry will build this, this will be integrated so that the development looks clearly real,” Bamsoet said.
