Rennes –
Chelsea shopping will continue. The Blues have reportedly entered the negotiation stage with Rennes for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Chelsea has so far invested over £ 200m to bring in six players, namely Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and finally Kai Havertz.
Havertz remains Chelsea’s most expensive purchase at £ 72 million, which could go up to £ 92 million. However, spending so much money has not satisfied Chelsea.
Chelsea are reportedly still looking at two players in the goalkeeper and central midfield positions. As for the goalkeeper, Chelsea have moved quickly to find a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who appeared to be fickle last season, conceding 58 goals and just 10 clean sheets.
Last weekend, Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy emerged as their target player. The 28-year-old goalkeeper is priced cheaply at £ 18 million and, through sporting director Petr Cech, Chelsea is trying to woo Rennes.
By the way, Cech is a former French club player and the good news is that Rennes has now entered the negotiation stage with Chelsea regarding Mendy.
“The talks have started. We have entered the discussion stage, although there is no agreement at the moment, there is still a long way to go. We highly appreciate Edouard as a player and as a human being, because he is a very important player in our dressing room. But this is part of the transfer market, I can’t say what the end will be like, surely Edouard is still a Rennes player, “Rennes president Nicolas Holveck was quoted as saying by GFFN.
“I understand very well that Edouard wants to join Chelsea. He has told us, but for now he is not playing for the worst club in Europe. He will also play in the Champions League if he stays,” Holveck continued.
Last season Edouard Mendy himself played 33 times for Rennes. He conceded 33 times and kept 13 clean sheets.
