AstraZeneca is halting all phase III clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine developed jointly with the University of Oxford worldwide. This is because one of the volunteers in England experienced side effects in the form of a strange illness that cannot be explained.
“As part of the implementation of a global randomized, controlled trial of the Oxford vaccine, based on standard times, we (then) postponed vaccination to review vaccine safety data,” AstraZeneca wrote in a statement cited by CNN International, Wednesday (9/9/2020).
This clinical trial was stopped to prevent similar cases from occurring. Although this news has been circulating, AstraZeneca did not disclose what kind of side effect reactions the patient had.
The company is testing its vaccines in several countries, including the United States, Great Britain, Latin America, Europe and Africa. They also emphasized that they will continue to investigate and confirm the disease caused by the vaccine.
“In a large trial, illness will occur by chance, but it must be independently reviewed for rapid verification. We are working to accelerate the review of a single event to minimize the potential initial impact on the trial schedule. We are committed to the safety of our participants and with the highest standards of behavior in the trial. us, “continued AstraZeneca.
Previously, AstraZeneca and eight other companies signed agreements on the approval of vaccines by the government. The agreement stated that the companies agreed not to request advance government approval for their vaccine.
The eight companies are the CEOs of AstraZeneca, BioNTech GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Moderna, Novavax, Pfizer and Sanofi. The companies promised to wait until the data showed that their vaccine was potential and safe to use.
“We believe and promise to help ensure public confidence in the rigorous scientific and regulatory process by which the COVID-19 vaccine is evaluated and ultimately approved,” he added.
The AstraZeneca vaccine is one of three Corona virus vaccines that have entered the final results of stage 3 testing in the United States. Common side effects that have occurred during vaccine trials include fever, headache, pain at the injection site, and muscle aches.
