Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
World Health Organization (who) stated that they could not wait for vaccinations COVID-19 until mid-2021. This statement was broadcast amid the enthusiasm of the world’s countries to be the first to administer the vaccine corona virus for its citizens.
The UN health agency welcomes the development of phase III clinical trials carried out by various groups. This marks the preparation of a vaccine in the final stage, which generally involves tens of thousands of people.
“We know of at least six to nine (vaccine candidates) who have come a long way. (However) given the realistic timelines, we cannot expect to be able to vaccinate widely until the middle of next year,” said WHO spokeswoman Margaret. Harris at a virtual press conference in Geneva, Friday (4/9) as reported AFP.
Under normal procedures, the vaccine testing phase can take months or years to verify until a candidate vaccine is declared safe and effective.
Vaccine candidates must go through a long process and procedure until they are declared safe and effective in treating a disease. However, the rapid increase in Covid-19 cases has prompted the need for a vaccine as soon as possible.
From this arises the concern that due to the urgency of the need, the level of safety and efficacy or effectiveness of vaccines is lower than it should be. Several drug companies emphasize the importance of adhering to high testing standards, not taking shortcuts or deviating from the standard, much less rushing to get vaccines to the public.
The WHO says there are currently 34 candidate vaccines around the world in various stages of human clinical trials. Additionally, there are 142 vaccine candidates that are still in preclinical evaluation.
Meanwhile, Soumya Swaminathan, WHO’s chief scientist, said the organization is working with experts from several countries. The US BPOM, the FDA, are among those who collaborated to clarify the criteria for a safe and effective vaccine candidate.
“We want to see a vaccine that is at least 50 percent effective, better if it is higher,” he said.
