The Netherlands managed to beat Poland 1-0 in the 2020/2021 UEFA Nations League match. Steven Bergwijn became the hero of the Oranje team victory with his only goal.

The Netherlands hosted Poland at the Johan Cruijff Arena in the first match of Group 1 of the UEFA Nations League League, on Saturday (9/5/2020) WIB early in the morning. The two teams drew 0-0 in the first half.

The Netherlands broke the deadlock in the 61st minute with a goal from Steven Bergwijn. Berwijn’s goal turned out to be the only goal created in this match.

This 1-0 victory led the Netherlands to top the Group 1 standings with three points. Meanwhile, Poland are at the bottom of the standings and have yet to score.

The course of the match

Both teams were struggling to present dangerous opportunities in the first 15 minutes of the match. The first threat was presented by the Dutch in the 21st minute.

The neat cooperation of the Dutch midfield in building attacks ended with Steven Bergwijn’s advance towards Quincy Promes. Promes was able to win the race with the Polish defenders.

However, the final shot was less than perfect as the ball went off Wojciech Szczesny’s goal.

In the 27th minute, Balanda had another chance. This time it was a Virgil van Dijk header that received a corner from Memphis Depay. The Liverpool player’s header was still too weak for Szczesny to secure easily.

Poland responded to the Dutch attack in the 32nd minute. Tomasz Kedziora’s attractive bait from the right side met Krzysztof Piatek in the penalty area, who immediately launched a strong shot.

Piatek’s efforts have yet to pay off because Jasper Cillessen is still quick to ward off the ball.

Holland almost opened the scoring in the final minutes of the first half thanks to Frankie de Jong. However, this Barcelona midfielder’s kick from inside the penalty area still hit the crossbar.

The 0-0 lasted until the end of the first half.

After the interval, Balanda increased her attack power. The host may appear dominant in control of the ball.

The goal that the Netherlands had been waiting for finally came in the 61st minute. From a cross by De Jong from the left side, the ball was met by Hans Hateboer. Then he sent the ball in front of the Polish goal.

Goal!! Uncontrollably controlled Bergwijn is capable of shaking the Szczesny net. The score changed 1-0 for the Netherlands.

Winning 1-0 made the Netherlands feel more comfortable in building attacks. Substitute Donny van de Beek had the opportunity to double the Dutch lead in the 81st minute.

He broke free from the offside trap after receiving comments from midfield. However, his shot was not good enough so the ball went wide.

No additional goals were created in the remaining time. The Netherlands closed this match with a 1-0 victory.
