SOCOTRA, KOMPAS.com – The establishment of an intelligence base between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the island of Socotra, Yemen, is aimed at monitoring Iran, China and Pakistan.

These estimates were expressed by political and strategic experts as cited in New Dawn, Wednesday (2/9/2020).

JForum, the official website of the French-speaking Jewish community, previously revealed that the United Arab Emirates and Israel were working to build a spy base in Socotra.

“The Israeli-EU spy base aims to monitor Iran’s activities in the Gulf of Aden and limit Tehran’s ties with the Houthi rebels,” said Ibrahim Fraihat. Anadolu Agency.

Fraihat is a professor of international conflict resolution at the Institute for Graduate Studies in Doha, Qatar.

Socotra dominates the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, the main sea route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.

The UAE has deployed hundreds of troops to the island since May 2018. This has led to divisions with the Yemeni government by rejecting the deployment.

“The establishment of this foundation is a further indicator that the agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel aims to forge a solid alliance between the two countries, not just to normalize relations,” Fraihat said.

On August 13, the United Arab Emirates and Israel announced a diplomatic normalization agreement negotiated by the United States.

The Palestinian Authority and various resistance factions have criticized the agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

They say the agreement does not serve Palestinian interests and neglects the rights of the Palestinian people.

Fraihat believes that the spy base between Israel and the United Arab Emirates will also help monitor China’s economic activity.

“Trump is involved in a trade war with China and he needs to monitor China’s trade activities,” Fraihat added.

Siege of Iran

Political analyst and University of Tehran professor Sayed Mohammad Marandi said Iran is already besieged by many US military bases in the region.

“Israel does not have the ability to attack Iran even if they have a joint military base with the United Arab Emirates in Yemen,” he said. Anadolu Agency.

Marandi argued that Iran was pleased to see the bilateral relations between the UAE and Israel revealed to the public after years of being considered a secret cooperation.

“The UAE knows that their deal with Israel is destroying their image in the region. But Trump forced them to do so in an effort to help Trump before the presidential elections,” Marandi said.

Indian analyst Haidar Abbas believes that the spy base will also be used to monitor Pakistan.

“From now on, the island of Socotra will not belong to the Houthi rebels, nor to the United Arab Emirates nor to Yemen. All power is now in the hands of Israel, that is, the United States,” he said in an article published in countercurrents.org, an Indian news portal.

He added that this rapidly changing scenario is changing the world situation like never before.

“Pakistan, which means China, is now under Israel’s radar,” Abbas continued.

Abbas said that if the sabotage occurred in Gwadar, Pakistan-China would blame Israel and the Gulf countries.

“If that really happens, Pakistan’s relations with the Gulf countries will be strained forever,” Abbas added.

South Asia

Professor Syed Qandil Abbas of Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan, argues that the agreement does not only have a direct impact on the Middle East.

The deal could also indirectly affect South Asia and other regions.

“If the India-United Arab Emirates-Israel triangle emerges, that will also change the dynamics of the South Asian region,” he said. Anadolu Agency.

The EU-Israel efforts in Socotra will be an effort to monitor the movements of the Iranian Navy in the region.

Maritime and air traffic in the southern Red Sea region can also be monitored from the area.

Abbas added that Pakistan was already facing critical consequences from the strategic partnership between Israel and India.

That is because the Israeli military equipment and the Indian commandos are already in occupied Kashmir.

He said that the developing situation had become a serious concern for Pakistan.

“If the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates also includes India, then this triangle could pose a serious threat to Pakistan,” Abbas said.

“It could also jeopardize peace and security in South Asia and the Middle East,” he added.
