REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OSLO – Norwegian Prime Minister (PM) Erna Solberg considers breaking the Quran to be a form of freedom of expression. She did not question this action during the anti-Islam demonstrations that took place on Saturday last week.
The demonstration against Islam in the Norwegian Parliament was promoted by the group Stop the Islamization of Norway (SIAN). The demonstration was countered by a demonstration in support of Islam.
The demonstration ended in violence after a woman from the SIAN group broke the Koran. The police were overwhelmed by reducing the emotions of the masses. The police eventually arrested several provocateurs.
Solberg argued that freedom of expression is respected in his country. He couldn’t ban what the SIAN group was doing.
“Very concerned about the freedom of expression that we maintain in Norway it may be different in other countries, or it may be perceived that we do not care about SIAN’s attitude, but we do,” Solberg said. Daily sabah, Wednesday (2/9).
However, Solberg does not want to be associated with the SIAN stock. It only considers that the actions taken by SIAN are defended by the State.
“I emphasize that I can’t associate with everything SIAN stands for. I think it really hurts how they talk about the people who live and their religion in this country,” Solberg said.
Solberg’s comments came a day after Turkey condemned the SIAN protests. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry says it is wrong to view racism and hostility towards Islam as part of freedom of expression.
