Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA– With much criticism about the possibility of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) experiencing a destination like Kertajati Airport in West Java, the Ministry of Transport (Kemenhub) has finally opened its voice. The lack of airports in Kulonprogo is due more to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the lack of the Kulonprogo airport, Yogyakarta, was more due to the Covid-19 pandemic problem preventing people from traveling. He is optimistic that after the pandemic the airport will be crowded.

“It’s just a pandemic problem, the support transportation, there are trains every 30 minutes, the distance is 30 minutes to the city center, every 30 minutes, the distance is 30 minutes, DAMRI is there, yes two, it is impossible to use another plane, “he said on Monday (8/31/2020).
He also denied that YIA would cross paths with flight users from Adi Sumarmo International Airport, Solo. The reason is that the increasing flow of passengers and airplanes in both YIA and Solo makes them complement each other.
“The traffic keeps increasing and complement each other, Solo and Yogyakarta complement each other. Klaten people like to fly Solo,” he explained.
The flow of passengers at YIA Airport continues to increase amid the Covid-19 pandemic, in May 2020, only 3,709 passengers passed, in June 2020 it increased to 48,806 passengers. After that, the increase in passengers continued, in July 2020 there were 86,546 passengers and from August 1 to 24, 2020 there were 93,860 passengers.

YIA was built with an investment of Rs 11.3 trillion, of which Rs 7.1 trillion was used for physical development and Rs 4.2 trillion for land acquisition.
With a terminal area of 219,000 square meters and a total airport area of 587 hectares, YIA is one of the largest airports in Indonesia with a current capacity to accommodate up to 20 million passengers per year or 11 times larger than the airport of Adisutjipto, which can only accommodate 1.6 million passengers a year. At its maximum capacity, YIA will be able to accommodate up to 24 million people per year.
