Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – It is estimated that Indonesia’s economic growth will have a difficult time recovering, as COVID-19 transmission cases continue to increase every day. Economic growth in the third quarter of 2020 is also forecast to grow negatively, which means that Indonesia will enter a recession.

Lead economist Faisal Basri said that economic growth in Indonesia is impossible to grow if the management of Covid-19 cannot be properly managed. Seeing that the cases of transmission of covid-19 cases continue to increase, touching between 2,000 and 3,000 in 24 hours.

Indonesia, according to Faisal Basri, needs to learn from Finland, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, which do not prioritize their economy, but managing Covid-19 actually allows these countries to quickly recover their economies.

As is well known, Finland, Singapore and Malaysia have officially become countries that are entering the brink of recession in 2020. But foreign tourists, who have the potential to generate foreign exchange, can enter their country.

“Indonesia may not be included, it is still blacklisted due to its reputation of handling the fourth bad covid-19 in the world. Unconsciously, we are being punished by the world. For not being able to handle this pandemic,” Faisal explained during a hearing meeting (RDP). with Commission VI of the House of Representatives, Monday (8/31/2020).

Therefore, Faisal projects that Indonesia’s economic growth in the third quarter of 2020 will be at -3%. If so, Indonesia will fall to the brink of recession.

Faisal also criticized Airlangga’s Economy Coordinating Minister who had said that Indonesia’s economic growth in the third quarter of 2020 contracted less than in the second quarter of 2020, which means that Indonesia was not in recession.

“In the third quarter of 2020, my estimate is minus 3%, but the Coordinating Minister said [Airlangga] it is not a recession. Menko wrote that the understanding of the recession was zero. The coordinating minister said that the minus is 5.3% in the second quarter, minus 5% in the third quarter, it is not a recession, because the minus is down. Are you afraid? the economic commander doesn’t understand what a recession is, ”Faisal said.

It should be noted that Indonesia’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2020 reached 2.97%. Then, in the third quarter of 2020, Indonesia’s economic growth contracted, to minus 5.32%.

The government projects that economic growth in the third quarter of 2020 will be in the range of 0% to -2%. Regarding the economic growth projection until the end of 2020, it is projected to grow positively by 0.2% to -1.1%.

The head of the Finance Ministry of the Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF), Febrio Kacaribu, said that Indonesia’s economic growth reached -1.1%, an achievement.

“If we can, minus 1.1%, that is an achievement in 2020 in the current global context. Now we are at the end of August that our time is increasingly limited. In the world there are no signs of improvement in its development, which it’s still tremendously scary, “he said. Febrio in a virtual debate, Saturday (8/29/2020).
