JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The vice president of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, evaluated that the controversy over the prohibition of the use of the word “anjay” launched by the National Commission for the Protection of Children (Komnas PA) should not continue.
According to him, the debate was useless and unnecessary.
“I think the ‘anjay’ problem is better off not turning into an unhealthy debate. Because it has no benefit and turns into debates that we think are unnecessary,” Dasco said at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (31 / 8/2020).

According to Dasco, the Komnas PA circular letter on the use of the word ‘anjay’ still needs to be studied further.
“Because it is multiple interpretations, casuistry and not a general crime, we have to examine it,” he said.
Dasco also requested that all parties focus on the Covid-19 pandemic that is still happening in the country.
He said that there were many other things that needed attention at this time.
“We recommend that we have to study it in depth and that it is no longer necessary to debate it. It is better if we think together about how to implement the health protocol, overcome the corona virus and the economic movement in Indonesia,” he said.
The CEO of Komnas PA, Arist Merdeka Sirait, had previously allowed a circular banning the use of the word “anjay” on social media.
According to Arist, the prohibition to use the term “Anjay” must be seen from various points of view and depending on the context of use.
“Does it mean to demean, insult, annoy or sensationalize people? If that element is met, then the term anjay certainly contains violence. If it contains violence, then there is no tolerance,” Arist said when contacted. Kompas.com, Sunday (8/30/2020).

In fact, according to him, the use of “anjay” in this context can be punished as a form of verbal violence according to the provisions of Law No. 35/2014 on the Protection of Minors.
However, if the term is used in the context of praising or expressing admiration, then Komnas PA does not question the use of the term “anjay”.
“It could be that if the meaning is a compliment or a salute to someone’s achievement or a spectacular product, that’s fine, use it,” he said.
Arist explained that the circular letter was motivated by public complaints to Komnas PA.
“So if there is an impact that causes violence, then the National Commission must be there,” he said.
