The course of the race
Before the race, there was bad news from Carlos Sainz Jr (McLaren). He was unable to participate in the race due to a problem with his car’s exhaust. Hamilton, who started from pole position, accelerated immediately leaving his opponents as soon as the race began.
His teammate Valtteri Bottas, who started second, fell behind, followed by Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) and Ricciardo (Renault). The position of the top four has not changed since the start.
On the third lap, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who started in 13th position, was already in 9th position. His teammate Sebastian Vettel only moved up one place to 13. However, on lap seven, Leclerc, who was on soft tires, began to feel overwhelmed and fell back to 12th.
Going into lap 10, the position of the top four remained unchanged. Hamilton is being chased by Bottas, Verstappen and Ricciardo.
SHOCK! On lap 11, Antonio Giovinazzi’s (Alfa Romeo) car collided with the barrier. George Russell (Williams) tried to dodge it, but Giovinazzi’s tires slammed into his car and he ended up hitting the barrier on the other side. They both survived and were able to get out of the car, but were unable to continue the race.
Race continued again. After returning to the pits, Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen started the race again on hard tires, hoping not to have to return to the pits to finish. The safety car entered on lap 14.
On lap 17, the safety car came out and the race returned to normal. Hamilton ran forward. Going into the middle of the race (22 laps), the position of the top four that had previously changed because many of those who entered the pits were again occupied by Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen and Ricciardo.
On lap 25, Leclerc returned to the pits. He got back on track in 17th position or weaker, but got up slowly. On lap 29, Vettel failed to take the eleventh position. He lost quickly to Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) who used new tires. It is not a beautiful day for Ferrari.
In the final laps, there was tough competition between Esteban Ocon (Renault) and Alexander Albon (Red Bull Racing) who were fighting for fifth position. Finally, Ocon managed to overtake Albon to finish fifth.
FINISHED! Hamilton, who was comfortable from the start, finally finished in first position. Bottas is second and Verstappen third. Ricciardo tried to catch up with Verstappen throughout the race, but ultimately had to settle for fourth place. Ferrari, which controlled the Belgian GP for the past two years, finally had to settle for 13th (Vettel) and 14th (Leclerc).
