According to the family, Boseman has colon cancer. It was diagnosed four years ago.

“A true warrior, Chadwick went through it all and presented all the movies that everyone loves,” the family said in an official statement.

His family said that Chadwick Boseman was receiving chemotherapy and surgery while filming Marshal, Da 5 Bloods and several other films.

“It is an honor for his career to bring King T’Challa to life in (the film) Black Panther,” said a statement from the family.

Boseman never disclosed his illness.

Born in South Carolina, Chadwick Boseman rose to fame when he played the role of baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the movie 42.

His performance in the film captured the attention of Hollywood.

Boseman died the same day Major League Baseball in the United States celebrated Jackie Robinson Day.

Chadwick introduced the character of T’Challa, which was first introduced by the Marvel production house in 2016 through the movie Captain America: Civil War.

The “Wakanda Forever” salute was echoed around the world after the release of the Black Panther movie two years ago.

Many expressed surprise when news of Chadwick’s passing spread on social media.

“It’s a hit,” actor and director Jordan Peele said on Twitter.

“It breaks me,” said actor and writer Issa Rae.
