Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) decided to increase the rates BPJS Health again almost double the current position. This decision was made shortly after the Supreme Court (MA) canceled the 100-percent increase in BPJS contributions imposed by Jokowi beginning in early 2020.

The increase is indicated in Presidential Regulation Number 64 Year 2020 with respect to the Second Amendment to Presidential Regulation Number 82 Year 2018 with respect to Health Insurance. The regulation was signed by Jokowi on May 5.

Here are the details:
– Rates for independent participants with benefits of service in class I treatment rooms increased from Rp80 thousand to Rp150 thousand or 87.5 percent per person per month. The increase will take effect on July 1, 2020.

– The rates for independent participants with benefits of service in class II treatment rooms increased from Rp51 thousand to Rp100 thousand or 89.07 percent per person per month from July 1, 2020. The increase will take effect on July 1 2020.

– Rates for independent participants with benefits of service in class III treatment rooms increased from Rp. 25,500 to Rp. 35,000 or 37.25 percent per person per month starting in 2021. The increase will take effect in 2021.

The coordinating economy minister, Airlangga Hartarto, explained that Jokowi made an increase in rates to maintain the sustainability of the National Health Insurance (JKN) program implemented by Health BPJS.

Just a reminder, Jokowi has increased BPJS Health contributions to independent participants by 100 percent earlier this year. With this increase, the fees for BPJS Health Class III participants increased from Rp. 25,500 to Rp. 42 thousand. For class II participants, the rates increased from Rp51 thousand to Rp110 thousand.

Meanwhile, contributions for class I participants increased from Rp80 thousand to Rp160 thousand. The increase was sued by dialysis patients before the Supreme Court.

The lawsuit was filed because they felt that Jokowi’s rate increase was charging them.

Tit for tat, the lawsuit was granted by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court declared that the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 75 Year 2019 regarding Health Insurance, which is the legal basis for the increase, had no binding legal force in February.

This means that the increase in BPJS contributions by Jokowi is canceled. Although it was canceled, Jokowi continued to impose a rate increase that he had been doing until March.

Contributions that have been paid by BPJS Health participants in the January-March 2020 period are not yet returned to participants. Jokowi just cut BPJS Health contributions to independent participants in April.
