PALEMBANG, KOMPAS.com – A wild elephant enters a residential area located in the village of Bumi Makmur, Nibung District, North Musirawas (Muratara) District, South Sumatra, on Tuesday (05/12/2020).

As a result, a resident named Zainal Arifin (53) died after being trampled on by the wild elephant’s head.

The village chief, Nibung Yatno, said the incident started when the elephant arrived and entered the village area.

The location of the elephant is about 100 meters from the residential area.

In fact, victim Zainal had fed the elephant food.

“The food was taken, then the person was also taken immediately using a trunk. Then the victim was hit and the elephant stomped on his head,” Yatno said when confirmed.

Yatno said that, for 36 years in the town, this time the phenomenon of elephants that entered a new settlement occurred.

After the incident, residents became increasingly alert.

“This elephant was first seen. Never before. We reported it to BKSDA. The victim was buried this afternoon,” Yatno said.

The head of the South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Genman Hasibuan, said that two months before the incident they had lost the elephant survey.

However, at this moment an elephant suddenly appeared in a residential area.

“Two months ago we wanted to be grazed in their habitat, but it does not appear again and only now is it known,” Genman said.

Genman said, from the report he received, the elephant came from Jambi.

Because the town area is located on the border between South Sumatra and Jambi.

In addition, regarding the people who were killed, they were trampled, according to Genman, due to the stress that the elephants became a spectacle of the residents.

“Initially, the elephant appeared on a palm oil plantation. The community was herded and turned into a show. The elephant was a wild elephant, possibly stressed out and stepped on residents,” said Genman.
