Call the United Nations and the United States that are already preparing to avoid a large asteroid

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – Research Institute of the National Institute of Aeronautics and SpaceTHE BREAD) Abdul Rachman said the international community was preparing to face the threat of collision asteroid to the earth.

The UN, according to him, has formed a worldwide network or organization specifically to anticipate large meteorites or other space objects falling to Earth.

“But there are also things that we cannot know because there are still limitations,” he said, quoted from Between, Saturday (9/5).

He said this was related to the potential threat of an asteroid falling to Earth and resulting in disaster. Abdul Rachman said monitoring of the potential could be seen from the asteroid’s orbit or trajectory.

“Not all of them cut Earth’s orbit, but others can cut it. The point is that it can be close to Earth’s orbit, so if even a small Earth orbit changes, it’s dangerous,” he said.

The asteroid population near Earth is quite large. Currently, according to him, there are around 2,000 asteroids or about 9 percent of the approximately 20,000 natural space objects close to Earth and included in the list of dangerous asteroids (PHAs).

According to him, most of the celestial bodies near Earth are derived from asteroid belts. That happens because there is gravitational interference from large planets like Jupiter, so there is a change in orbit and it finally enters close to Earth’s orbit.

“It is not just an asteroid, comets are like that as well. Therefore, it is increasingly important to make continuous observations. Again, it is an international task,” he said.

Therefore, according to Abdul, the United States set a target to be able to detect 90 percent of large asteroids.

Known, scientists made estimates of the time and type of asteroid that has the potential to collide with Earth. For example, they estimate that an asteroid with an energy equivalent to the Hiroshima atomic bomb could collide with Earth in an annual period.

For him, Abdul said, the Earth was enveloped by the atmosphere. “We can study [dari] “The collision that occurs on the Moon that has no atmosphere and creates many craters on its surface,” he said.
