Irma’s story, giving back basic food needs, because she couldn’t contain her neighbors from hunger

GOWA, KOMPAS.com Unable to watch her neighbor starve amid Large Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB), a housewife (IRT) in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi returned food assistance from the Regency Government (Pemkab) on Friday ( 05/08/2020).

The housewife is Irma Daeng Simba (36), resident of Bontocinde Hamlet, Bontoramba Village, Pallangga District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. He arrived at his town’s office at 13:00 WITA, Friday (05/08/2020).

He arrived carrying a package of groceries in the form of rice, sugar, cooking oil, eggs and instant noodles that he received several hours ago.

Food packages were returned to be delivered to other residents who were most in need.

“I am giving this basic food back because I feel I have no right and there are still many people in need,” said Irma.

In front of the Irma officer, he admitted that he could not bear to see his neighbors starve because their livelihoods were interrupted as the PSBB advanced.

It’s hard to make a living on PSBB

Irma herself is not really a wealthy citizen, in fact, she is registered as a cardholder of the Family Hope Program (PKH), which receives Non-Self-Effective Assistance (BNPT) every month.

“I myself receive PKH and I receive government aid every month and that is enough for us,” Irma said.

However, during the PSBB, Irma also complained about the difficulty of earning a living.

Her husband Samad Daeng Situru (38), who before the PSBB mango trade had to be unemployed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Irma is still grateful that she can still help her husband earn a living by selling takjil before breaking the fast.

“My husband is not working because he cannot leave the house to enter the fasting month, so I sell takjil in front of the house,” said the mother of two children.
