The Kepler telescope is known to have stopped working in 2018 due to a lack of raw materials. However, scientists are still combing through several observations made by Kepler while searching for planets outside our solar system.
Quoting CNET, on Monday April 20, 2020, an Earth-like planet discovered by the Kepler telescope is called Kepler-1649c and is 300 light years from Earth.
NASA said that instead of thousands of other exoplanets discovered by Kepler, the planet is the size and temperature considered most similar to Earth.
The planet is also said to be located in a habitable star zone, an area where there could be water sources.
Interestingly, in terms of size, planets outside the solar system are slightly larger than Earth. Called Kepler-1649c, the planet receives 75 percent of the amount of light compared to light received by Earth from the Sun. Thus, the temperature is estimated to be not much different from Earth’s temperature.
Initially, the planet was mistakenly identified by a computer algorithm. However, scientists found it by reviewing the Kepler data.
“This distant and interesting world gives us greater hope that the second Earth is among the stars and waiting to be discovered,” said NASA scientist Thomas Zurbuchen.
Don’t be happy just yet, although this exoplanet looks promising, the planet may not necessarily be a substitute for our Earth.
The problem is that Kepler-1649c is in orbit around red dwarfs, a type of star that NASA says is known for its explosion that makes the planet’s environment almost impossible for all lives.
The United States space agency also warns that the atmosphere in Kepler 16-49c remains a mystery and its size calculation may be inactive.
The international research team that discovered the exoplanet then published Kepler-1649c in an astrophysical journal this April.
“With red dwarfs happening almost everywhere in our galaxy, small, rocky planets have the potential to be inhabited. One of them may not be much different from our Earth, which looks a little brighter,” he said. lead author of the astrophysical journal Andrew Vanderburg of the University of Texas.
It is unknown if there are any other creatures on the exoplanet that the Kepler telescope found, but this latest finding is a hope that humanity could later find life outside of our solar system.
