KOMPAS.com – The Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Communication and Information, the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Commerce officially blocked the black market (WB) cell phones that were circulating in Indonesia on Saturday (04/18/2020).
The blocking is carried out by scanning the IMEI number, in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information No. 11 of 2019 that has been ratified.
This policy is carried out to ensure potential tax revenue that can enter the national treasury.
Because according to data from the Indonesian Cellular Association (APSI) until the end of 2019 each year, it is estimated that the government will lose a fiscal potential of up to Rp 2.8 billion, with the entry of around 11 million BM cell phones.

How to verify the IMEI number
International identity of mobile equipment (IMEI) is a unique code for each mobile device that is applied internationally.
With this IMEI number, differentiate each cell phone from other units.
Here are some ways to verify the IMEI number:
- IPhone and iPad IMEI numbers are printed directly on the back of the device.
- While on Android phones, IMEI numbers can be viewed through the “Settings” menu and then select the “About Phone” menu.
- Another way is to press the number * # 06 # in the mobile phone menu
- Another way to see the cell phone sales chart, there is usually an IMEI number tag.
How do you know the status of the IMEI?
After knowing the IMEI number, you can check the status of the cell phone to find out if the cell phone has been officially registered or not.
This can be done by entering the IMEI number in the imei.kemenperin.go.id website column.
Enter the IMEI number in the field provided for verification.
If it then says “IMEI is registered in the database of the Ministry of Industry”, then cell phones are distributed through official channels.
Conversely, if after being checked on the Ministry of Industry website and the IMEI number has not been registered on the Ministry of Industry website, the cell phone could be the BM cell phone that entered Indonesia in not official.

Please note, however, that IMEI blocking only applies to illegal mobile phones that are active after April 18, 2020.
Therefore, IMEI blocking does not apply to BM phones that have been active and used by the public prior to April 18, 2020.
What happens if the BM cell phone is locked?
If the mobile phone has been blocked, it cannot be used to access the Internet and communicate through cell phone operators.
Still, cell phones can still be used using a WiFi connection.
What about cell phones bought abroad?
For mobile phones purchased abroad and brought to Indonesia, the IMEI number must first be registered on the page imei.kemenperin.go.id.
Registration must be done before the phone is activated and connected to a cellular network in Indonesia.
To be on the safe side, registration on the Ministry of Industry website is done before arriving in Indonesia or using a WiFi network.
In addition, mobile phones purchased abroad with a minimum value of US $ 500 (Rp. 7.8 million) must also pay taxes through customs upon entering Indonesia.
