KOMPAS.com – Today 92 years ago, on October 28, 1928 to be precise, the II Youth Congress was held, which triggered the birth of the Youth Promise.
The push for the Youth Promise was one of the turning points in the Indonesian nation’s journey toward independence from Indonesia on August 17, 1945.
Because at that time Indonesia was still divided until the youth did not understand who their enemy was and joined together to fight him. The association was later marked by the time of the Youth Oath.

Youth organizations
Before the birth of the Youth Promise, youth organizations like the Indonesian Association started in 1908, then Tri Koro Darmo in 1915.
Quoted Daily kompas, November 22, 1977, before October 28, 1928, the youth were still divided into various regional organizations like Jong Java, Jong Sumatra and others.
Commemorating the 5 years of Jong Sumatranen Bond in 1921, Mohamad Yamin published a collection book of poetry entitled Tanahair.
However, at the time Yamin was referring to Andalas, Sumatra. Not including Indonesia.
In six years, a new consciousness had grown among the young, because the enemy they were facing was the same, namely the Netherlands.
This consciousness makes you seek unity in a new consciousness. In 1926 the first Indonesia Youth Congress (I Youth Congress) was held.
Even that year, that awareness was not enough to give birth to a youthful oath.

The birth of the oath of youth
The new Youth Commitment was born two years later. In 1928 Moh. Yamin published a new collection of poetry titled Indonesia, Tunjuk Darahku. It shows a change in the consciousness of youth.
When the second Indonesia Youth Congress (Pemuda II Congress) was held in 1928, Malay had long been the language of association that was widely used throughout the archipelago.
However, at that time the position of the Malay language was not strong.
Some Dutch experts recommend that Dutch be the official language throughout Indonesia (used by all Bumiputeras).
But there are also Dutch experts who consider that the Dutch language is so loud that it is not appropriate to be used by the inhabitants of the interior (Indonesia).
Due to this difference in understanding, the Dutch colonial government did not immediately come to a policy to make Dutch the only official language.
Whereas previously France and England required their language to be applied in their colony. However, this Dutch policy gave Malaysians the opportunity to become Indonesians.

Youth Engagement Seconds
Quoted Kompas.comOn October 28, 2019, the Second Youth Congress was held from October 27 to 28, 1928.
The congress gave rise to a declaration that is remembered today. The figure who contributed to the statement was Moh Yamin.
During the conference, he wrote down the idea of ”Youth Promise” on a piece of paper.
He then handed the paper over to Soegondo Djojopoespito, who was then president of Congress.
“Ik heb een elegant formulering voor de resolutie (I have an elegant resolution formula),” Yamin told Soegondo, quoted from the book Remembering Prof. Mahaputra. Sir. H. Muhammad Yamin Pahlawan Nasional RI (2003).
The declaration, called the Youth Commitment, was born after the participants expressed mutual agreement on the importance of youth unity.
The term Youth Commitment itself did not appear in the congressional decision, but it did occur later.
The following is the text of the decision of the II Congress of Youth:
First: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, claim to be shed with one blood, Indonesian soil.
Second: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, claim to be a nation, the Indonesian nation.
Third: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, defend the language of unity, Indonesian.
Legendary Indonesian Song Raya
The song Indonesia Raya was created and played for the first time at the Youth Congress on October 28, 1928.
The song was played instrumentally at the conference on his violin. One thing that is interesting about the Indonesian Raya song is that not many people know that this song has only been sung for one verse.
WR Supratman composed the song in three stanzas. Of the three, the first verse is much more popular and memorized by Indonesians than the second and third.
