7.1 M earthquake in Northeast North Sulawesi due to plate subduction activities in the Philippines

BMKG Tsunami and Earthquake Center Director Bambang Setiyo Prayitno said the M 7.1 earthquake in northeast North Sulawesi was a medium-sized earthquake. From the results of BMKG analysis, the earthquake occurred due to the subduction activity of the Philippine plate.

“By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was of a moderate type due to the subduction activity of the Philippine plate. This earthquake also experienced an update from M 7.1 to M 7. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the coordinates of 4.94 North Latitude and 127.44 East Longitude or, to be precise, located in the sea at a distance of 132 km northeast of the Melonguane city.

“So far, there have been no reports on the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake,” Bambang said.

Bambang said that this earthquake had no potential for a tsunami.

“The public is advised to remain calm and not be affected by issues that cannot be justified. To avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged as a result of the earthquake,” Bambang said.
