KOMPAS.com – The ratification of the omnibus law, the Employment Creation Act (UU) initiated by the government by the Indonesian Parliament, sparked demonstrations in various regions.
Workers and students expressed their aspirations to reject the Employment Creation Law, the discussion of which was considered quick and only benefited investors.
Several regional leaders also responded to this refusal action.
At least five governors declared that they would adapt to the protesters’ aspirations and wrote a letter to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

1. West Java
The Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, sent a letter to Jokowi and the Indonesian Parliament as a follow-up to the absorption of the aspirations of workers demonstrating at the Gedung Sate shipyard in Bandung city on Thursday (8/10 / 2020).
Earlier, Ridwan Kamil had an audience with workers’ representatives in Gedung Sate.
The letter sent to Jokowi contains the voices of workers who reject the Employment Creation Law.
“The contents convey the aspirations of the workers to reject the Omnibus Law,” he said.
In addition, there is a request for Jokowi to issue a Perppu (Government Regulation Instead of Law) on the Job Creation Law.
“Second, ask the president to at least issue a Perppu because the legal process still has 30 days to review with the president’s signature,” Ridwan Kamil said.

2. West Sumatra
West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno also sent a letter to Jokowi to convey the aspirations of workers and students regarding the rejection of the Job Creation Act.
The letter number 050/1423 / Nakertrans / 2020, dated October 8, 2020, requests Jokowi to issue a Perppu.
“The West Sumatra provincial government conveyed the aspirations of the unions and students to the president and asked him to consider issuing a Perppu in accordance with legal provisions,” Irwan said on October 9, 2020.
In addition, Irwan also sent a letter number 050/1442 / Nakertrans / 2020 dated October 8, 2020 to the Indonesian Parliament.
In the letter, it was stated that the adoption of the Job Creation Law by the Indonesian Parliament on October 5, 2020 led to demonstrations against the general law of the Job Creation Law by the Workers’ Union or Trade Union of Workers in West Sumatra.
“In relation to this matter. The West Sumatra Provincial Government conveyed the aspirations of the Workers ‘Union or the Workers’ Union which stated that they refused to pass the planned Job Creation Law,” Irwan said.
Previously, demonstrations were held at the West Sumatra DPRD building for two consecutive days after the Job Creation Act was passed.

3. West Kalimantan
The Governor of West Kalimantan, Sutarmidji, sent a letter requesting the issuance of a Perppu on the Job Creation Law to Jokowi.
There are two points presented by letter number 180/2686 / HK-C, dated October 9, 2020.
The first point explains the demonstration against the omnibus law by the unions, various student executive bodies and elements of society.
Meanwhile, the second point explains the conflict concerns among people associated with maintaining gradually improving economic growth.
“So the West Kalimantan provincial government is requesting to issue a government regulation instead of a law (Perppu) repealing the general law,” Sutarmidji wrote.
Additionally, the letter was sent to Jokowi through the West Kalimantan Representative Office in Jakarta.

4. Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY)
DI Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X also sent a letter to Jokowi on the rejection of the Worker-Worker Employment Creation Law.
The letter numbered 560/15863 was uploaded to the official Instagram account @humasjogja.
The existence of this letter is known as the Sultan’s effort to absorb and continue the aspirations of the workers related to the enactment of the Copyright Law.
The letter was made after a hearing with workers and worker representatives that took place on Thursday afternoon (10/08/2020) at Ndalem Ageng, Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta.

5. East Java
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa also held a hearing with representatives of workers and workers who held a demonstration against the Job Creation Law in the City of Surabaya on Thursday (10/8/2020).
During the hearing, he stated that he would try to facilitate the workers’ representatives to meet with the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD.
Furthermore, Khofifah stated that his party also sent a letter to Jokowi.
“The aspirations of those who asked the governor to send an official letter to President Joko Widodo, I fulfilled immediately. Today the letter was sent through the Interior Minister,” Khofifah said.
