JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Ida Fauziyah said that entering the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 marked by the use of digital technology there will be many types of businesses that will not develop or even disappear.

He said that labor-intensive industries would be replaced by machines. The automation process is expected to be more massive in the future.

This has been predicted by various parties, including the World Economic Forum (WEF), and its latest report predicts that there will be 95 million new jobs growing along with 85 million workers moving out.

“For Indonesia, McKinsey has predicted that there will be 23 million types of jobs affected by automation and there will be tens of millions of new jobs that will appear during that time,” he said virtually at the Kompasianival event on Friday (4/12/2020) .

In addition, Ida added, from the Ministry of Manpower itself in 2017, it had carried out a labor market study that estimated that the technology, communication and information industries would be the industries with the highest growth.

“The study also projects that job types related to the two industry sectors, such as programmers, data analysts and artificial intelligence designers, will become rapidly growing jobs,” he said.

Meanwhile, for traditional jobs, Ida continued, their roles may be replaced by digital technology such as printers, mailmen, and receptionists, the demand will decrease in the future.

Ida said that the Covid-19 pandemic caused society and industry to form a new order of life. Not only are the industries that implement work from home (WFH) changing, but also people’s consumption patterns. Undoubtedly, this change has a major effect on the behavior of industry and workers to create a new order in the world of work.

Technology also makes work very flexible both in terms of time and place, so work no longer has to be done from the office with monotonous hours. This change has accelerated the transformation of the workforce that continues to advance towards the 4.0 industrial revolution.

“Ultimately, the profile and skills of the workforce needed in the future will also change,” he said.

In the WEF research, Ida said, she has predicted the capabilities that will be increasingly needed in the future. That is, critical and analytical thinking, creativity and innovation, technology use and design, problem solving skills, flexibility, ability to deal with stress, and leadership and social influence.

Meanwhile, it was also found that the number of skills related to manual and traditional skills would decrease.

“So right now job competence and flexibility are the main points. Workers are also required to master technological developments with soft skills suitable. Furthermore, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship will be important points for the development of the business world in the future, ”said Ida.
