Jakarta –
Scientists predict that another pandemic will emerge after COVID-19. Various infectious diseases that are currently known as ‘Disease X’ can appear over time.
Quoted from The Straight Times, Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona, Dr. Kenneth Iserson revealed his prediction about the possible spread of infectious diseases to ‘Disease X’.
“It is possible that other unknown infectious diseases are already in circulation and could have devastating consequences,” said Dr. Iserson.
Here are the ‘Disease X’ facts cited on the Goody Feed.
1. It is still a hypothesis
‘Disease X’ is an epidemic that is still hypothesized by scientists and is expected to affect humans in the future. The condition is included in the World Health Organization (WHO) model for the list of priority diseases.
The list of diseases is reviewed annually to identify 10 viruses that pose a serious risk to global health. These diseases are prioritized in research and development as a preventive measure.
2. It is an emerging infectious disease (PID)
PEI is an infectious disease whose cases have increased in the last 20 years. Overall, these conditions account for 12 percent of human pathogens.
PEI can spread and become a major pandemic like COVID-19, with a single virus that can be transmitted significantly between humans. ‘Disease X’ can occur and humans may have a difficult time treating it due to limited precautions.
3. Created since February 2018
In February 2018, the experts met in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss a plan for a research and development institute. During the meeting, ‘Disease X’ was included in the list of top priority health threats, equivalent to the Ebola, Zika, Lassa fever and SARS viruses.
4. Caused by pathogen X
The EcoHealth Alliance, which studies the threat of undiscovered zoonotic viruses as part of the Global Virome Project (GVP), writes on its website that the source of the virus is unpredictable. Climate change becomes a complicating factor, especially if a deadly virus appears during the thaw of frozen ground after thousands of years.
5. As research material
According to the WHO, ‘Disease X’ represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic can be caused by a pathogen for which there is currently no known cause. The research and development plan is working to prepare for the unknown ‘Disease X’.
6. Help researchers plan for the future
Scientists first developed an R&D plan in 2016. This is an effort to address the gap between a pandemic outbreak and global preparedness.
Their study can help minimize the social, economic and political problems that have been experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
