Zomato Announces Temporary Employee Salary Cuts Amid Lockout

Restaurant aggregator Zomato said Friday it will lay off about 13% of its employees and announced pay cuts of up to 50% across its entire workforce for six months from June. The layoffs and temporary cuts in wages in Zomato come at a time when the country is at the end of the third phase of the national blockade to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), which has paralyzed the economy. and forced many companies to cut the workforce.

In a note sent to Zomato employees early Friday, founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal wrote: “As we continue to build a more focused Zomato, we do not anticipate having enough work for all of our employees.”

“We owe all of our colleagues a challenging work environment, but we will not be able to offer that to around 13 percent of our workforce in the future,” added the founder of Zomato.

Zomato Co-Founder & COO Gaurav Gupta and CEO-Food Delivery Business Mohit Gupta will be contacting affected staff via video calls in the coming days to “help them find work as soon as possible.” Zomato “will support them financially and emotionally as much as possible,” Goyal said.

Zomato employees affected by the layoffs “will receive invitations for an expanded call with the leadership team within the next 24 hours. These invitations will be sent to them by email and Dingtalk,” Goyal said. “For everyone who is not affected, an email from [email protected] in the next 6 hours should tell them that their jobs are here to stay.”

Payment cuts

Goyal said that while lower cuts are proposed for lower-paid company staff, the pay cut of up to 50 percent is for those with higher wages. He also said that despite salary cuts, the company will continue to fall short of its salary cut target.

“Many people have volunteered for a 100 percent pay cut for at least six months; that is something I would not expect to happen at many other companies,” he told employees.

The pay cut will not apply to employees who have already taken a voluntary cut equal to or greater than the proposed temporary reduction, said the CEO of Zomato.

He also said that Zomato employees who don’t have a job at the company will continue to receive a 50 percent salary during the six-month period.

“During this time, outside of the 1-2 week turnaround period, we expect these people to spend 100 percent of their time and energy looking for jobs outside of Zomato,” he said in the letter to staff.
