Islamabad:
Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the mastermind of the Mumbai attack and Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, was arrested in Pakistan on Saturday on terrorism financing charges, an official said.
Lakhvi, who was on bail since 2015 in the Mumbai attack case, was arrested by Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
However, the CTD did not reveal the place of his arrest.
“Following an intelligence-based operation carried out by CTD Punjab (Pakistan), the leader of the outlaw LeT organization, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, was arrested on charges of financing terrorism,” he said.
He further said that Lakhvi, 61, was arrested in a terrorist financing case registered at a police station.
“Lakhvi is accused of running a dispensary, using funds collected for the financing of terrorism. He and others also collected funds from this dispensary and used these funds for additional terrorist financing. He also used these funds for personal expenses,” the CTD said .
The CTD said that in addition to belonging to the banned terrorist organization LeT, Lakhvi is also a UN designated terrorist.
“His trial will take place before the Lahore Anti-Terror Court,” he added.
