In an emotional letter written to his late mother on Diwali, NCP chief Sharad Pawar took a trip back in time on Saturday, recalling his political milestones and their influence on his life.
In the letter, addressed to his mother Shardabai and posted on Twitter, Pawar attributed his ability to maintain dialogue with people of different ideologies.
He made a special reference to his rain-soaked speech that became the defining image of the 2019 state assembly elections and turned the tide in favor of his party, the NCP.
Relating how NCP was in trouble after some of his close colleagues left the party, Pawar said: “Some colleagues from the party left us and we faced the challenge of winning the elections … Since you gave me the mantra to take on any challenge. without accepting defeat and without getting depressed, it was not a question of giving up. “
He recalled an incident where his mother suffered irreversible leg damage after a bull attack, and how she tenaciously lived and devoted herself to public service. “Inspired by the incident, I decided to get up and travel through Maharashtra, reaching every nook and corner. During this period, I felt a surge of new youthful energy in me as I even braved the heavy rain at an election rally in Satara that struck a chord with voters, translating into votes…. New political equations were formed and our government took office … I remembered how you guided me when I submitted the nomination papers for my first election, ”wrote Pawar, 79.
Saying that his mother had dreamed of him becoming the Prime Minister of State, Pawar regretted that she was not present to see him take the oath. “Similarly, when Appasaheb and Prataprao were honored with Padmashree (Pawar’s brothers), you were not there. When I received Padmabhushan from the central government, your memories flooded me … “
Referring to his mother’s election to the local district board, Pawar said: “The way you handled the dual responsibility of public life and the home front left a deep impression on my mind … You traveled long distances, to often carrying the little babies on your side … All these qualities were absorbed into me, which helped me live up to people’s expectations … “
He praised his mother for not imposing her “socialist views.” “Although you were leaning towards socialist principles, I was influenced by the ideology of the Mahatma Gandhi-Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru-Yashwantrao Chavan Congress. But you never imposed your political views on me … You taught me that although there are political differences, we must maintain dialogue between us ”.
Stating that the brothers miss their “bai” every Diwali, Pawar said, “Although we miss you, your memories remain with us at all times.”
