New Delhi:
The alleged rape and murder of a 20-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras will be investigated by the IWC, Yogi Adityanath’s government said tonight.
The order to hand the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation came on a day when Congressional leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi visited the victim’s family in the village 200 km from Delhi.
“Prime Minister @myogiadityanath Ji has ordered the CBI to carry out an investigation into the entire Hathras case,” the UP prime minister’s office tweeted.
Angry protests against the police and government have taken place across the country, including one in the national capital Delhi on Friday where Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal appeared and demanded that the four defendants be executed. .
The ruling BJP, who is under pressure for its apparent inability to prevent horrific crimes against women (at least two more assaults and rapes have been reported from the state since the Hathras case) had previously dismissed the opposition protests as a “stunt. political” .
Much of the criticism is directed at the UP government’s handling of the case, including its treatment of the young woman’s traumatized family, whom they allegedly locked in their home to hastily incinerate their daughter at night.
In addition to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, senior UP police and government officials, DGP HC Awasthy and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi, went to Hathras today to speak with the family.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose resignation has been demanded by activists and the opposition, made a statement of his government’s commitment on Friday. “Those who even think of harming mothers and daughters in UP, their destruction is assured,” she tweeted in Hindi.
The Allahabad High Court has taken up the case and has summoned senior government and police officials to appear before it on 12 October.
