Xiaomi Mi 11 first teardown reveals L-shaped cameras, battery and more

Another day, is it just another smartphone teardown video? Well, no. The Xiaomi Mi 11, which was launched yesterday, is the world’s first flagship smartphone with Snapdragon 888 SoC technology. So, let’s dive into what Xiaomi has packed for us.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Leather - Smoke Purple and Khaki

Before we break it down, let’s see what comes inside the box. Opening it has documentation and the Mi 11. As we all know, the Mi 11 does not come with an adapter in the box. However, Xiaomi is kind enough to give you the option of getting a 55W GaN charger for free (for a limited time).

Moving on, the device under test is a Smoky Purple Leather Edition. The AIO Technology video (via GSMArena) begins with a scratch test to find out the hardness of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Surprisingly, Xiaomi pre-installs a screen protector on the Mi 11 despite ensuring a 2x higher scratch resistance glass.

Rear panel, display

Although the screen survives the keys and damage from the sharp blades, it gives up on the screwdriver when we see deeper grooves on a harder scratch. At the bottom is the SIM tray which according to the video has an outer and inner central part made of metal but with a plastic frame.

In case you don’t know, none of the Mi 11 variants come with an official IP rating. The supple vegan leather back of this edition is the icing on the cake for easy removal. By prying it open, you can see stickers all over the other side of the back panel that is covered with cushion foam. Inside, we see the components arranged horizontally in three sections.

Camera, motherboard

The first part shows the L-shaped camera modules inside the squirrel’s housing. This is a drastic change from the vertical stripe on the predecessor, the Mi 10. Removing the screws (17-Total) and prying the design reveals that the Flashlight is independent and connects to the motherboard via a cable.

The back of the camera design also has a foam cushion for protection. Moving the cable clamps we see the complete module (with 7 cushion foams on the back) consisting of an NFC coil, a conductive cloth and a wireless charging coil (with heat dissipation layers).

Removing this shows the motherboard and cameras. After disconnecting the battery, the daughter board from the main board, we see that the entire camera module is fused into one box. The main lens is a Samsung ISOCELL HMX, while the ultra-wide and macro lenses are OmniVision CMOS OV13B10 and Samsung S5K5E9 respectively.

They also have copper foils attached to their cables as a heat sink. Speaking of which, the top and bottom of the motherboard also have copper foils to dissipate heat and the silver part is the thermal paste that is applied on top of the Snapdragon 888 processor. Below the board, we see the top earpiece that works. as a stereo speaker and another VC board for further cooling.

Battery, rear

The bottom part has an equally well-built enclosure around the components. Starting with the clamp that has padded foams to hold the cables, reveals the part with the speaker (tuned by Harmon Kardon), square X-axis linear vibration motor, SIM tray, Type-C port.

Finally, the 4,600 mAh battery and the mid-frame. Two tabs hold the BM4X lithium-ion polymer battery made by Sunwoda Electronics Co Ltd. After this, removing the middle frame reveals Goodix’s in-display fingerprint sensor, which also functions as a heart rate sensor.
