The U.S. trade ban against Huawei has curbed the Chinese manufacturer’s global ambitions as it is forced to forego Google’s services. While this is not a problem in your local China market, where Google services are not used, it is a huge obstacle to your global markets.

The trade ban came when the company overtook Apple for number two in terms of global shipments, and when the company looked at Samsung for number one. Makes you wonder who could pick up Huawei’s cloak and reach a similar level of popularity, and it seems like most Android Authority Readers have their eyes on a specific brand.

Is Xiaomi the new Huawei?

Android Authority Huawei and Xiaomi survey.

Last week we asked Android Authority readers if Xiaomi is the next Huawei in terms of popularity. 2,047 votes were cast in total on the website. We have added the votes and 79.1% feel that Xiaomi is indeed the new Huawei, while almost 21% feel that Xiaomi will not reach the heights of Huawei.

Xiaomi has already proven to be a leading player in various markets in terms of market share. For one thing, the company has been number one in India for a while. But the U.S. trade ban against Huawei has opened the door to other Android brands, and Xiaomi appears to have been the biggest beneficiary.

Canalys’ first quarter 2020 shipping figures show Xiaomi is number one in Italy, beating Apple, Huawei and Samsung. Research also shows that Xiaomi is now number four in Western Europe, with a year-on-year growth of 79%. Meanwhile, Huawei’s third place experienced a 40% drop, no doubt due to a combination of COVID-19 and the lack of new devices with Google services. So if the trend continues, we could see Xiaomi passing Huawei here.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 / 8T was also the world’s most popular Q1 2020 phone according to the tracking firm, ranking second overall behind iPhone 11. Xiaomi had two more devices in the top ten, while Samsung I had four. Huawei devices were not among the top ten.

However, a surge in popularity also comes with more scrutiny, whether Xiaomi fans like it or not. Therefore, the company will have to be extremely clean if it wants to stay close to the top.
