Several Xiaomi and POCO users in India are facing annoying issue after a recent MIUI 12 update, showing “Find device closed unexpectedly” error. The device reboots as soon as the error message appears, and this cycle continues indefinitely. The error is most likely a conflict caused by a recent update to the Airtel Thanks app (a SIM / account management app from the Indian telecom service provider) and the MIUI Find My Device settings. While Xiaomi has not disclosed the exact cause of the problem, the company is working with Airtel to fix it.

In a recent tweet on the subject, Harmeen Mehta, Airtel’s Global CIO and Chief Digital Officer, confirmed that the issue affects users who have the Airtel Thanks app on their devices. As a workaround, Airtel has introduced a small tweak to the app, which should prevent affected devices from rebooting until Xiaomi offers a permanent fix. However, for this solution to work, you will have to open the Airtel Thanks app at least once after restarting.
Some @airtelindia customers are experiencing phone failures on MI phones. We have worked with Xaomi to find the cause and they are preparing a solution. Meanwhile we have put a little tweak in the airtel #Thank you help. Open the app once to apply the new settings. # HappyDiwali2020

Xiaomi is currently working on a permanent fix, which is expected to be released to users next week. In a statement about the fiasco, the company said:
“We have come to our knowledge that the Mi and Redmi devices show an error, causing an unwanted reboot of the device. Certain lines of code have been observed to misbehave while updating an application. While we are working to fix the issue with the app developer and release a permanent update early next week, we have implemented temporary containment measures for the past 36 hours. This solution may require consumers to obtain their devices from a service center. At My India, the customer experience is top priority and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. As a committed brand, our effort is to continue meeting the expectations of our consumers, thus offering the best user experience for everyone. “
Until Xiaomi provides a solution, you can also try to uninstall the Airtel Thanks application from your device, disable “Ultra Battery Saver” in the phone settings, or disable “Find My Device” as a temporary solution. However, these solutions may not be 100% effective.
