AHMEDABAD: A senior government official in Gujarat on Sunday said experts have pointed out that the prevalence of L-strain of Covid-19 virus – which was seen in cases in Wuhan – could be the reason behind higher mortality rate in the state compared to other states.
Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary, health & family welfare, said experts feel that this Covid-19 strain is more virulent and this could be responsible for lesser recovery rate and higher death rate compared to the national average. Gujarat has 4.5% death rate and 9.5% recovery rate compared to the national figures of 3.1% and 23% respectively.
Dr Atul Patel, leading infectious diseases specialist and advisor to the state government on Covid-19, said that samples will be collected from patients with severe complications and would be sent for analysis to Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center (GBRC) for sequencing. CG Joshi, director of GBRC, confirmed that the sequencing done recently at the center had L-strand of the virus.
