Amid the COVID-19 coronavirus scare, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Tuesday that work from home for IT companies will run through July 31, adding that 85 per percent of IT work is done from home. Previously, work from home was scheduled to end on April 30. Prasad held a discussion, via videoconference, with IT ministers and state officials.
The minister also said there were many relaxations for working from home and the IT Secretary, the Communication Secretary and the Postal Secretary made presentations from their departments citing the Center’s requirements and expectations of state departments. The rules for working from home have been relaxed. “We will aspire to work from home to become a new norm,” said Prasad, asking participants to encourage young entrepreneurs to invest in new companies.
Speaking to media people via video conference, Prasad said Bihar’s deputy chief minister, Sushil Modi, asked to develop an app that shares the best strategies from all states to contain the pandemic. “We have accepted this suggestion. I have asked the National Division of Electronic Government (NEGD) and the National Center for Informatics (NIC) to prepare an application. Both NEGD and NIC have agreed to develop an application in three days,” said Prasad.
The Minister praised the department for making the Arogya Setu application a success, adding that the application must go ahead. At the meeting a proposal was made to tag the electronic pass with the application and it was agreed, the law minister said. All Aarogya Setu applications will be linked at the district level. “The Arogya Setu application has also become very popular,” added the minister. He also praised the Postal Department for performing social services and digital services such as digital payments and hoped that states would use our postal department’s vast network in the country.
Prasad also called on state governments to treat the pandemic as an opportunity and to prepare for the next boom in the electronics manufacturing sector. He also said that “anger at China can be used to benefit India’s manufacturing sector,” adding that a great opportunity in India’s electronics manufacturing sector is likely to open soon.
The minister praised various departments for their services during the shutdown. “I want to appeal to the chief ministers, deputy chief ministers and ministers whose age for electronic manufacturing is yet to come in India. The condition in China is such and considering the anger of the people against China, I am sure of the opportunity to India is coming. The ministry has given incentives and I would like to say that the cooperation of the states will play a crucial role in it, “said the minister.
